Noriaki's slight frame and delicate appearance belie his true strength. He dresses in fine silk robes and hakama pants of white, trimmed with sky blue. Over his robes, a set of hardened leather armor, also in white and blue, protects his midsection. Thrust through his sash is a Katana, edge-up. He carries himself with an almost palpable air of refinement and nobility.

Background Edit

The Iron Shogun rules the Kingdom of Jade, but the old Genasi Houses held vast coffers and centuries of prestige, and these things do not vanish overnight. Though removed from direct politcal power, many of the old Houses still hold considerable financial and cultural importance to the Kingdom, which they wield in the name of the Iron Shogun, of course. The Matsumoto are one such clan, also known as the House of Storms, for their Storm Genasi lineage. One of the oldest clans in the Empire, the Matsumoto held the Throne several times when the Kingdom was still an Empire, and they still bear a grudge against the Last Emperor's house for lowering their status. The Iron Shogun allows the Matsumoto to hold much of their previous wealth and what land that is still within the kingdom's grasp, as they are some of his biggest supporters among the noble houses. Detractors are quick to question, though, whether the Matsumoto aren't a little too supportive.

Noriaki is the third son of the current clan head, Nobuo Matsumoto. While the family has been largely free of taint, a source of no small amount of pride, Noriaki was born decidedly unnatural. He is entirely bereft of the elemental touch the family carries, appearing as a fairly normal human with white hair and blue eyes. Not eager to show off his impure offspring, Nobuo kept Noriaki on the family holdings for most of his life, being allowed to leave only on rare and important occasions.

He was, however, able to convince his father to allow him to train under the master swordsman, Hachi Danmyou, since Hachi was already employed to teach Noriaki's older brothers. The boy had incredible natural talent for swordsmanship, his slight frame hiding almost frightening speed and strength. Noriaki threw everything he had into his sword training, as if by perfecting his skills, he could rid himself of the taint. At the same time, he had almost no talent in the Arcane. As Noriaki trained and sparred with his brothers using wooden blades, they began to notice that local elemental spirits would become excited, swirling around Noriaki and his blade, most, but all, invisible to the naked eye.

This natural affinity was a sure sign that the boy could become a powerful Shugenja, but his father would have none of it. He did not intend to put his tainted son in the spotlight. Frustrated, Noriaki searched the family library for information on spirits and shugenja techniques. He found but little, basic incantations and rites only. Still, he was excited to learn them, and practiced in secret, using the spirits to aid his swordwork. When Hachi discovered this, he was furious that the boy would go against the traditions he was being taught by mixing them with spirit magic instead of arcane magic. Thereafter, Hachi refused to continue teaching Noriaki, and appeals to his father fell on deaf ears. Noriaki saw his only path to self-redemption vanishing before his eyes, and a life of quiet, imprisonment in his family's holdings unfolding before him. Desperate to continue sharpening his skills and to make something of himself, he made the momentous decision to flee his family holdings.

Early in his journey, not really knowing where he was going, Noriaki found himself travelling a lonely road. He had picked it because of the relative peace and good scenery. Unfortunately, he had wandered far enough from civilization that the Iron Legion's patrols in the area were less frequent, and a gang of local thugs had taken to pressing passers-by into giving up their valuables. They saw Noriaki, a solitary, slightly built man, obviously rich, and decided to take him for all he was worth. Noriaki saw a gang of thugs barely knowledgeable of how to use their stolen swords, and decided to take them for all they were worth. Violence quickly ensued as Noriaki tried to fight seven men at once. As he began to to realize that he might be in over his head, he heard a mighty roar. "Taaakaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!" A large dragonborn warrior crashed into the fray, sending a bandit to his knees with the force of his opening blow, despite the thug's desperate block. Noriaki saw the warrior, and smiled. Then he turned and kicked the kneeling bandit in the side, sending him sprawling out of the fight. The two swordsmen met each other's gaze for a brief moment, and took up positions back to back. Within moments, the thieves had fled the scene.

As it turns out, Takahaan was a young warrior whose first real mission was to protect the runaway Noriaki. After assuring himself that Takahaan wasn't just there to drag him home, Noriaki began to take a liking to the young dragonborn warrior. The two have spent the months since then travelling the Transitive Isles, seeking out glory, honor and chances to polish their skills.


Hooks Edit

  • Noriaki is eager to prove himself, and will often jump on chances to do so.
  • He detests demons and Oni on several levels and will gladly take up a chance to kill them or thwart their plans.
  • Noriaki's training is incomplete. For more information on how to improve his craft, he might risk a great deal.
  • He is loyal to the Kingdom of Jade and would be easily convinced to defend his homeland or to help the Iron Shogun.
  • He would also be easily convinced to take action to oppose the interest of the Last Emperor's house.
  • Noriaki owes a good bit to the elemental spirits, and if local spirits were somehow threatened, he would be compelled to fight for them.
  • Lastly, Noriaki has a soft spot for small girls, brought on by leaving behind his little sister, with whom he was quite close.

KickerEdit

Some evidence, namely his human appearance and affinity for elemental spirits, suggest that Noriaki may not actually be Oni-tainted. In truth, Noriaki is the reincarnated form of a powerful Storm Spirit who agreed to be reborn in human form to aid in the Oni War. The unusual birth was meant as a sign to show that this was the case, but the knowledge of how to identify reborn spirits was lost in the Oni War. Noriaki himself has not considered this possibility, and fully believes himself to be tainted at this time. Note: It is NOT appropriate to reveal this kicker prior to the end of paragon tier, as discovering his true nature and awakening his power as a Storm Spirit is intended to form the basis of the fluff for Noriaki's Epic Destiny.
